S2 Creative Director Dave Spurgeon did us proud last week at the World Championship Road Race in Perth.
Despite not riding his bike to work everyday, Dave was obviously getting in enough training as he qualified to represent Great Britain at one of the qualifying events held around the world earlier this year. Last week Dave flew out to Perth, Western Australia for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.
More than 400 athletes competed in the time trials on Thursday September 1, with some 1150 riders taking part in the road races three days later. The competitors come from 39 different countries, with Mongolia entering a rider in 2016 for the first time.
The UCI Gran Fondo Series is the new label given to the former UCI World Cycling Tour (UWCT) which was launched in 2011 for amateur riders. The UWCT Final becomes the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, and the UCI World Champions’ jerseys and medals have been redesigned accordingly.
This year, 11 qualifying events were held in different countries across five continents. The top 25% of finishers in each race qualified for last week’s World Championships. The 154.5km road race for men aged under 55 includes a total of 2010m of climbing.
Dave had a fantastic experience despite the tough hilly course! The After picture tells its own story!
We look forward to Dave’s future sporting achievements!
